For years, I've been meaning to get on the bone marrow registry. I've heard so many stories (and recently, found a blog or two...like this one) about people who need matches, and I've always felt a pang of guilt that I could be someone's match and we'd never know it. One of my neighbors also just told us someone in her family needs a transplant, which finally made me take action.
Unfortunately, like me meaning to be tested sooner, I meant to post about this sooner...since in honor of Mother's Day, I discovered that the National Marrow Donor Program was giving away free testing kits online and I wanted to spread the word. But when I went to get the link tonight, I discovered the promotion ended yesterday. I'll still post this in case you want to check out the program - I'm just not sure what the cost is. All you need to do is fill out a form to confirm you are eliglble and they sent you a kit with some giant q-tips. Swallow, swab your cheek, repeat 4 times and stick the whole thing in the mail. (Oh, and add a biohazard sticker on it. That was enough for make me decide to not mail it from work!) Click here for the website with details.
